Friends in my community know that I laser cut wood craft kits and sell them in my shop. There are a variety available for different seasons and themes. In this craft session I show some of my painting techniques on a sign kit that can be put together so that the design is changeable. We arrange florals in a watering can without glue, and create a removable bow decoration so you can change this sign again and again!

You will need:

  • “Round watering can sign DIY kit” from my shop
  • Craft paint and a couple brushes
  • A heat gun (always prevents the boredom of watching paint dry!)
  • Tissue paper
  • Mod Podge
  • Antique wax (or brown craft paint) and wet wipes
  • Stick Fast glue
  • Fabric scraps
  • Velcro dots
  • Jute twine

Paint the circle piece white and dry it with a heat gun.
Then paint a layer of Mod Podge and while its wet, crumple a piece of tissue paper (as wrinkled as you can) and press it on. I use a sander to trim the edges of tissue paper off. Dry with a heat gun.

With a wet wipe, spread antique wax over the circle and dry it.

Paint the watering can piece silver. I then dry it with a heat gun and use a coarse brush to dab on a darker gray/charcoal color, then light gray, then white with the same brush. This makes it look like galvanized metal with some shine.

Then take a rust paint color and add around the can.

Use stick-fast glue to place the watering can “outline” piece onto the circle first, towards the very bottom of the circle. Then when you glue the full watering can piece on top of that, there will be an opening to insert florals.

Trim and arrange florals in the can opening as desired!

Trim strips of fabric scraps and layer in an “X” shape.
Tie a knot of jute twine around the middle of the X and trim the ends.
Use a velcro dot to secure the bow to the watering can.

Paint your wood butterfly if desired. You could place on a kebab stick and arrange with the florals.

Display your sign on a small easel or hang it! You can replace the florals and bow by the season or when you feel like it. Thanks for crafting with me!
